my response is better

Here is the letter I sent in response to the creep in the Daily Sentinel. I will keep y'all updated on whether or they have the nerve to publish it.

This letter is written in response to Mr. J. Patrick Capps, whose response to my original letter was published in this past Sunday's Daily Sentinel.

Mr. Capps, I am not sure how my original letter caused you to conclude that I thought all pro-lifers were ignorant rednecks. Because this paper only gives its citizens the space of 300 words in which to describe all the positive and life-affirming qualities of the pro-choice movement in general and the Planned Parenthood in particular, I would never waste that precious space by insulting others. As for the idea that pro-lifers are ignorant rednecks, well, that's just silly. I am fully and unfortunately aware that misogyny is not relegated to any one class, race, education level or socio-economic status.

Mr. Capps, you write that before you are married, your hypothetical fiancé will be forced to sign a pre-nup stating that if she has an abortion during your marriage, for any reason, you have the right to divorce her, kick her out of your home, and leave her penniless. I wish you luck in your quest to find a woman who would agree to such a clause. Why would any woman sign a contract that would essentially sentence her to death should she be unable to carry a pregnancy to term? To carry the child of a rapist should she be assaulted? To deliver a still-born child should the fetus die in her womb? Mr. Capps, I find such ultra-conservative views arrogant and smacking of male privilege. I think any woman who was confronted with this kind of contract would take it as a clue that you would not be the kind of husband who would respect her, her choices, or her life, and would immediately run the other way.

On that note, thank you for publishing your name along with your letter and providing such a clear warning sign. And to the ladies of Nacogdoches - consider yourself warned.

Even if this letter never gets printed, just the fact that it exists makes me happy. You are such a crackjack writer. I will buy anything you're selling. :)

I meant crackerjack, but I had left a lot of comments at that point and was a bit crazed. Also, I just wanted to say how much I like "The New Me." The New Me is the new black.
