I was raised on the Standard American Diet and became a vegetarian in high school, at the age of 17. I survived on veggie burgers and grilled cheese until I got to college, where my artsy school offered vegetarian and vegan options every day in the cafeteria. This allowed me to maintain my diet while putting off actually learning to cook for another four years. When I graduated and joined the real world (with a real kitchen!) I finally had an opportunity to master some culinary skills; when I moved from New York to Texas, land of steak and BBQ, I had no choice but to learn my way around the kitchen.

I've made a number of mistakes along the way, but these days I feel fairly confident as a cook. Still a vegetarian, my diet these days is mostly vegan (I'll eat local, happy eggs, but dairy and I don't get along) and I favor recipes that use whole foods, organic ingredients, are minimally processed, and make use of local, seasonal items. To keep myself motivated and to share my love of food with the world (or at least the part of the world that reads my blog) I try to post at least once recipe a week. Bon appetite!
